The Basics of Defragging – Housecleaning for Your Computer

by Dave on September 2, 2010

Defragmenting a computerNo one likes a slow computer. One of the reasons computers can slow down over time is that the files get ‘fragmented,’ or scattered all over the hard drive. When that happens the computer has to work harder than usual to find and put together all the fragments needed to open and run programs. Defragmentation, is the process of organizing the fragments of data so all the related data is together. ‘Defragging,’ is one way you can help speed up your computer as well as help it last longer.

In this podcast, IT support guru Bill Black explains the process and offers some defrag tips and tricks. This is the second of three podcasts we recorded using my HTC Evo smartphone. The sound quality isn’t great, but we’re working to improve the process.

where does one find the best place to download the UltraDefrag? I have 64bit Vista… I noticed it on majorgeeks.com… is this a trustworthy source?

Does the ultradefrag have a gui interface?

Thanks!

Hi Janice, Here’s the site I downloaded it from: http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/ I think I initially heard about UltraDefrag from Bill Black, our IT guru.

I have never neglected defragging and I think thats one reason why my laptop is as fast as it was a couple of years back. I did however change my defragger after upgrading to Win7. I now run one of the third party tools as I find the lack of a proper GUI and manual defrag a problem.

I’m currently running UltraDefrag myself.
